The Interview with my Mentor
My Interview with Dena Day:
Question 1: What common misconceptions do you think people have about the Emergency Room?
Answer: People believe we are a first come first serve basis which is not true because we are based on an acuity scale. People believe we are a primary care physician which is not true because we are meant for emergencies only. People believe we are at their beck and call (like maids) and that’s not true because we are there to help you but the ER is not your house. The last misconception is that some hospitals are not trauma hospitals and can’t always deal with a higher acuity patient so they must be transferred out.
My Reflection: This is important to my project because I need to know what these misconceptions are and how I can help correct them.
Question 2: Do you think medical dramas portray the role of nursing correctly or accurately? Why?
Answer: No because they have no frustration, there is little paperwork portrayed, most of the nurses who I work with are already married so there is very little co-worker relationships, and not everyone is perfect looking ALL the time.
My Reflection: This question is important to my project because it proves how some of the misconceptions people have about nurses are formed.
Question 3: Did media in any way encourage you to become a nurse?
Answer: No
My Reflection: This question is important to my project because it shows that the longer you have been a nurse the less media has influenced you like it does on adults now.
Question 4: Do you believe some medical dramas can positively encourage students to join the field?
Answer: Yes, because it can give them excitement and passion.
My Reflection: This question is important to my project because not all media is bad and I don’t think media is bad; I just want people to know the truth.
Question 5: When recommending nursing what position do you think students should aim for?
Answer: They should aim for what they’re passionate about. Nursing has a lot of flexibility so it is encouraged to never set your goals on one specific item.
My Reflection: This question is important to my project because many students are so sure what they want to do when going into the field, but when they are exposed to another area they might fall in love with it and change their route. This is why mentorships and internships are important because it gives a student a chance to find what they are passionate about.
Question 6: Is there any ways we can disperse the misconceptions given?
Answer: Yes
My Reflection: This question is important to my project because I need to have hope in my project to be able to set the bar straight.
Question 7: What makes nursing such a special field?
Answer: Nursing is so special because people have flexibility where if their life changes they are able to accommodate to their lives.
My Reflection: This question is important to my project because nursing is a very special thing and most students aren’t aware of everything nursing can truly offer them.
Question 8: How is pediatrics different from the Emergency Room?
Answer: Pediatrics there is always only one thing wrong with them, but with adults you have different comorbidities that have occurred through their lives.
My Reflection: This question is important to my project because other areas provide different insight into how various people work.
Question 9: What do nurses do that the media doesn’t acknowledge?
Answer: If a coworker is out nurses can cover their role because they encompass all roles, but if a nurse is out, only other nurses can cover that role.
My Reflection: This question is important to my project because there are many things that nurses do that people overlook simply because they are unaware.
Question 10: What do nurses not do that the media claims they do?
Answer: Nurses don’t come to work with the intentions of being sexy. They also make our work look glamorous when in reality we do the things others don’t want to do.
My Reflection: This question is important to my project because our jobs entails many obstacles and other qualities people don’t know.
